This paper shall discuss the nature of the relational database in modern computing. Tracing the origin of the relational database back to the early 1970s, this paper will then examine what exactly constitutes a relational database and why it is different than other forms of data storage and retrieval. The overall purpose of the paper is to provide readers with a broader understanding of what is meant by the term relational database.
