This paper is written about Niccolo Machiavelli. Niccolo Machiavelli proposes to those who would be rulers that they need not be loved by their subjects, but for as long as they are not "hated and despised (Nymeyer 1995)," they would have done their part in preserving political power. And one of the by which their subjects could be tamed and kept loyal was to abstain from usurping the property and women of these subjects (Nymeyer). They could be sure they would keep such loyalty by keeping these subjects content.
