Music History: How Popular Music Reflects the Musical Traditions of the Historical Past in the Humanities
In this paper we will explore the importance of twentieth century popular music and related the historical chain of folk song writing that links them all together. By using Bob Dylan and John Lennon as the apogee of modern popular music, we can see the extent of musical history that is invariably linked through the ages. If Beethoven, the medieval minstrels, and Schubert can be considered valid in academia for the humanities, so can these songwriting masters of the twentieth century.
