This paper discusses the career and methods of librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, who wrote the libretti for three operas by Mozart, "Cosi fan tutte," "don giovanni," and "The Marriage of Figaro," examples of Italian opera, which da Ponte contributed to and which he then brought to America with his own opera company in 1832, thus continuing the influence of this style after Mozart's death.
