This paper discusses the role of women in Italian films, beginning with the neo-realist period during and after world War II and showing some of the female icons that were created and repeated again and again, with women often seen in the contrasting roles of Madonna or whore, often at the same time, and with more power in the social order than is common in some cinemas.
