Ingmar Bergman.

This paper discusses the work of Ingmar Bergman. The films of Ingmar Bergman are set apart from the pack through a deep knowledge and understanding of human nature that manifests itself in the characters he brings to the screen. Bergman is also a master at utilizing themes and motifs in his films, such as the ever-present dream sequence, which, once recognized and understood, show his work in a whole new light. Bergman's films have resonated with audiences over the years because they ask questions that are universal, and focus on the truths of the human condition that are pondered by all mankind - love, mortality, regret, sorrow, fear and so on. In the following pages I will examine some of the films of Ingmar Bergman, (beginning with an in depth look at what many consider to be his masterpiece, The Seventh Seal), and explore the ways in which they comment on the human condition.
