What are we to make of Hollywood's take on relationships at the turn of the century. From a viewing of five recent critical and/or popular hits, the implications are bleak. If film can be seen as a mirror of society, then the five films reviewed here - Mendes' "American Beauty", Frears' "High Fidelity", Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut", Junger's "Ten Things I Hate About You", and Smith's "Chasing Amy" - suggest that we are living in a time of sexual immaturity and self-absorption. 4 pgs.
