Wayne Skeene, a broadcaster, former CBC employee and author of Requiem for the CBC describes the CBC as "the nations last, best hope for protecting the shaky elements of our culture and identity."(Skeene, 1993, p 2) Skeene states that the CBC has always had a nationalist mandate: It is "the national broadcast system that was originally meant to strengthen Canadian cultural awareness and national identity."(Skeene, 1993, p 7).
